Strategy - Session 2 - Building a New Economy Vision

Facilitator: Paul Hill, Executive Director WVEPSCOR

Strategy - Session 3 - Your Piece of the Big Picture

Facilitator: Mary Ellen Mazey, Dean of the Eberly School of Arts & Sciences, WVU

One of the biggest challenges for a community is to decide what to focus on. Everyone would like to do everything, but no one has the resources to do it all. A better strategy is to pick a unique image and growth strategy and invest in it to be the very best. In other words, it’s better to be great and well known for one thing than to be mediocre and unknown for everything! This session will help you understand how to choose your niche focus areas based on your current strengths and potential future success.

Strategy - Session 5 - Connecting Local & Regional Strategies

Facilitator: Mary Ellen Mazey

To attract or retain citizens in our state, we must consider how to combine assets and resources across regions. While one small town or city may not be able to provide all the cultural and service amenities of a larger city, when looked at as a region it may be possible to compete more effectively. With each small city choosing a unique area to develop, a connection of small cities in the region can offer a higher “quality of place” for new workers and companies. Learn how to connect with your neighboring areas to make it happen.

Strategy - Session 6 - Building a Consensus in a Community

Facilitators: Leslie Stone, Stone Strategies, LLC & Kent Spellman, Executive Director Ritchie County EDA

Often the only thing holding back economic and quality of life improvements is the lack of support from the entire community on a clear path forward. It is challenging to bring together people from different backgrounds with sometimes competing agendas. But it is possible – and exciting – when everyone’s voice is heard and realize that it doesn’t have to be a “win-lose” situation but a “win-win”! This session will provide you with the insight and skills to work towards building a consensus for action.
