Local groups are gearing up to respond with positive approaches to a hate group targeting out state. In addition to a creative approach announced earlier by Covenant House, the YWCA is organizing a Stop the Hate Rally in Charleston. Details from the YWCA:
In 24 hours a hate group will be in Charleston WV calling themselves the Westboro Baptist Church. Various institutions within our community will be targeted over the next few days with abominable words and demonstrations of hate. Leaders and members of these institutions are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community at large; however, they graciously request that any responses from community members occur at locations other than their own to promote peace and to move the spotlight away from hate and toward positive expressions of love and inclusiveness.
Therefore, we encourage any and all citizens who seek to stand up and speak out against hate, to participate in any of the dynamic, powerful and positive community-organized events below.
Stop the Hate Rally
State Capitol of West Virginia (river side)
Thursday, April 8, 5:30 PM
Calling people of good will to act as non-violent agents of healing in our community. Join our chorus of reassurance and care for victims of hatred and intimidation. Coming from all walks of life, we will stand together to say, in a collective voice, that there is no place for hate and violence in our community. While our voices will be strong, our message will be peace.
