Winter Jazz Weekend on January 29 and 30, 2010 in Bridgeport is billed by event producers as an educational, cultural and economic development conference-style event by organizers meeting at the Bridgeport Conference Center.
The West Virginia Jazz Society is scheduling Master Class workshops presented by professional touring jazz musicians, mentoring sessions for students, a business networking luncheon and an invitational student community concert for daytime activity. At night, the event will feature live jazz music in a traditional jazz nightclub environment created inside the conference center. Musicians scheduled include players direct from the clubs of Greenwich Village in New York City and from the vibrant Atlanta jazz scene, as well as several bands from the central West Virginia region.
The overall theme of the event is “The Business of Music” because it emphasizes the career opportunity and the business opportunity potential for economic development, as well as showcasing the area’s ability to host a unique, upscale event.
Winter Jazz Weekend is supported by the Greater Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Harrison County Cultural Foundation, the West Virginia Jazz Society, Inc., area businesses and volunteers from the education community. Planning is ongoing for three more jazz events in 2010 to build a foundation for even more ambitious plans.
Two of the long-term goals for the effort are to stage an East Coast Jazz Summit in the region in 2011, which would draw hundreds of visitors, and to develop a destination for jazz music fans, similar in concept to Branson, Missouri, the destination for country music fans.
Details for the event will be announced as sponsor commitments and final arrangements are made. For information now, or to reserve tickets priced at $50 per night for the performances, which will feature a gourmet meal, call: 304-808-3000 or email: WVJazzSociety@aol.com.
