We've often blogged about the role that colleges and universities play in sparking creative community growth. But there is another category of institution that unfortunately often gets overlooked in terms of its potential and actual impact on community health: churches and other bodies of faith.
If you consider the "pillars" of creative community growth, churches have historically played a major role. Sometimes this role has been positive, sometimes not so much. For example, in the area of diversity and inclusion, churches were often at the forefront of the civil rights movement. Regrettably, some churches were also on the forefront of opposition to integration and civil rights.
Many churches are now embracing their broader role in building strong communities. In addition to preaching the Gospel they focus on serving those in need, teaching life and job skills such as using computers, and even initiating gardening or arts projects that bring people together. Some are even getting involved in environmental issues, taking God's request to be good stewards of the Earth seriously.
Churches will play a very strategic role on the major civil rights issue of our day, which is the emotionally-charged issue of gay rights and specifically gay marriage.
How are churches playing a role in building your community? We'd love to hear some examples that we can share at the upcoming Create WV 2009 Conference October 18-20 in Huntington.
Concrete examples
Given that CreateWV and similar organizations tend to talk about the creative class, including faith communities and non-profits, I figured these kinds of groups/communities might be something worth considering as having similar agendas...

http://www.unionproject.org/ (Pittsburgh, PA)
Other similar groups...

I notice there is no such group listed for WV. Maybe they just aren't known (the Union Project isn't listed for Pittsburgh, after all). But even if there aren't, these kinds of projects/communities in other areas can still serve as an inspiration/model for starting such things in WV.
Role of the faith community in WV development
Thanks for this blog post on the role of the faith community in West Virginia's economy. The WV Council of Churches has a strong presence at the WV Legislature. They take their social responsibilities very seriously. The Church has been an important fomentor of change throughout West Virginia's history, if often below the radar. My church in South Charleston is heavily involved in taking care of the sick and hungry and in helping parents rear healthy, well-adjusted children through its affordable day care center. I couldn't help but think of the Church Universal's effect on culture as I watched the YouTube video of miners crashing Larry Gibson's July 4 picnic. You can bet the Church was there, exerting its influence in nonviolent response to the ugliness exhibited that day.
