In 1969 Walter Cronkite announced to the nation in his evening news broadcast that the Environmental Protection Agency declared Chattanooga had the nation’s worst air quality. A few years later, the New York Times published an article noting that Chattanooga was the only major city in the South not experiencing growth.

Jon Coddington, director of Urban Planning and Design for the River City Company, will tell the story of Chattanooga’s Renaissance, explaining how the city was able to transform itself in a generation to once again attract industry, quality jobs and people from around the nation and around the world to Chattanooga, including Volkswagen’s new $1billion North American production facility. In his presentation, Coddington will talk about the processes, principles and strategies used in Chattanooga’s revitalization efforts. He also will speak about what Chattanooga learned from other cities and how it adopted their successes.
